Fall energy-saving tips

There’s a chill in the air! Use these tips to stay cozy while lowering your energy usage and costs during cooler weather.

Simple ways to save energy this fall

For most people, their home’s heating system has the biggest impact on their energy bill. As you prepare to fire up your heater this year, remember that reducing the amount of time it runs is key to saving energy and keeping your bill in check. Here are some simple tips to help.

Schedule a furnace tune-up
Before it gets too cold, have a professional HVAC technician make sure your furnace is clean, safe and working properly. You can make your tune-up even easier and cost-friendly with a heating and cooling protection plan from NRG Protects.
Adjust your thermostat
Keep your thermostat set to “auto” (so it doesn’t run 24/7) and adjust the temperature. Lowering your thermostat by 7°-10°F for 8 hours a day can reduce your heating and cooling bill by up to 10% a year. The smaller the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures, the more you save.
Take advantage of sweater weather
Got your winter clothes out already? Before you crank up the heater, see if cozy clothes or a blanket is enough to keep you warm.
Adjust your ceiling fans
Run your ceiling fans clockwise and at low speeds to redistribute warm air in the room.
Use that free solar heat
Open your blinds or curtains on sun-facing windows to warm up during the day. Make sure to close them after dark for a little extra insulation.
Unblock air vents
Make sure furniture, drapes, or other obstructions aren’t blocking warm air from your heater.
